Research
Conducting and reviewing sexual assault-related research is a crucial part of the DoD’s sexual assault education and training processes. Sexual assault-related research not only helps identify fundamental factors pertaining to sexual assault, such findings can also serve as the data source and foundation for future sexual assault program enhancements.

This report provides results of the 2008 Service Academy Gender Relations Survey conducted by the Defense Manpower Data Center (DMDC). It assesses the incidence of sexual assault, sexual harassment and related issues at Department of Defense Service Academies. The survey results include incident rates of sexual assault, sexual harassment and sexist behavior and stalking-related behaviors; a discussion of students’ perceptions of Academy culture with respect to sexual assault and sexual harassment; the availability and effectiveness of sexual assault and sexual harassment training and progress in reducing or preventing sexual assault and sexual harassment.

2006 Service Academy Gender Relations Survey (1.89 MB)
This report provides results of the Service Academy 2006 Gender Relations Survey conducted by the Defense Manpower Data Center (DMDC). It assesses the incidence of sexual assault and harassment and related issues at the three Service Academies. The survey results include a discussion of unwanted sexual contact incident rates, the availability and effectiveness of sexual harassment and sexual assault training, the leadership response, progress in reducing sexual harassment and sexual assault, sexual harassment and sexist behavior incident rates and incident rates of stalking-related behaviors. The report also provides a synopsis of current research results on sexual assault and sexual harassment on college campuses and the Citadel.

In addition, this report includes an analysis of Reserve component members’ perceptions of the prevalence of racial/ethnic harassment and discrimination in the Reserve components, details of incidents they have experienced, the extent of racist/extremist group activity, the effectiveness of Department of Defense and Reserve component policies on racial/ethnic issues and the state of racial/ethnic relations in the Military and in the nation. This Executive Summary briefly explains Office of Management and Budget’s requirements for reporting race/ethnicity and then summarizes the major survey results.

Task Force Report on Care for Victims of Sexual Assault, April 2004 (1.60 MB)
As the result of a 90-day review of all sexual assault policies and programs among the Services and DoD, this report contains the findings and recommendations of the Department of Defense Care for Victims of Sexual Assault Task Force. Throughout this review, the Task Force sought to understand the culture, command structures and resource limitations when evaluating appropriate courses of action needed to fill gaps in policies and procedures, particularly as they pertain to in-theater care. The findings are intended to provide a high-level, comprehensive assessment of the strengths, weaknesses, and gaps in current DoD and Service policies regarding care for sexual assault victims.
